Death of a Canadian Legend
(firmenpresse) - WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/30/12 -- Don Starkell of the famed adventure story "Paddle to the Amazon" - passes at age 79. Date of passing January 28th, 2012.
Don Starkell, adventurist, athlete and explorer was probably best known for his 12180 mile canoe trip from Winnipeg to the Amazon River in 1980 with his two sons Dana and Jeff.
Orphaned as a child, Don overcame his insecurities through paddling a canoe during the great floods of Winnipeg of 1950.
A divorce from his wife changed the course of Don's life so he decided to give his boys an adventure they'd never forget - to paddle a canoe from Winnipeg to the Amazon River.
Don went on to follow his longing for adventure and to find his limit, when in 1990, he paddled to the North West Passage in his kayak only to become frozen in the ice and nearly die just miles from his destination.
He lost most of his fingers and toes to frost bite but overcame his disability to have many more adventures.
The Starkells were inducted into the "The Guinness Book of World Records" for the longest canoe trip in the world.
Chris Forde from Lost from Normal Presents is close to finishing an educational documentary about Don and his sons' expedition to the Amazon.
