Las Vegas Veterinarian Offers Lion Shaves for Cats Under Anesthesia
(firmenpresse) - LAS VEGAS, NV -- (Marketwire) -- 01/29/12 -- All About Cats Veterinary Hospital is advising Las Vegas cat owners to schedule Lion Shave Under Anesthesia grooming appointments early. As the weather begins to warm up in Nevada, the hospital staff is encouraging cat owners to schedule these appointments now. The cat hospital offers this popular as a special service to cat owners, said the Dr. Terri Koppe. The provides this special grooming service for cats that will not tolerate being handled by a traditional professional groomer.
"Some sensitive cats can find any type of grooming, even in the hands of an experienced and caring groomer, to be a stressful experience," explains Dr. Koppe. "While we do not take the administration of anesthesia lightly, we recommend anesthetized grooming for cats that do not tolerate traditional grooming as it ends up being safer for the cat. We find that certain cats react poorly to people handling them, even gently, during the traditional grooming process. A lion shave requires a lot of combing, shaving, bathing and drying which is impossible for even an experienced groomer when the cat is intolerant or difficult."
According to Dr. Koppe, a typical cat grooming session involves several steps which can prove impossible if a cat does not accept being handled. "First the fur must be combed out to remove mats and knots. Even in the hands of a caring and trained groomer, sensitive cats are surrounded by unfamiliar noises, such as hair clippers, blow dryers and especially running water required for bathing. If the smell of dogs is present, that can present another stressor for an already intolerant cat," said Dr. Koppe.
"We do not offer traditional ," said Dr. Koppe. "However, since this cat grooming procedure cannot be performed on a very sensitive or intolerant cat that is not sedated, our provides the ."
A typical lion shave removes all the fur from a cat except for the face and head, tip of tail and paws, producing a lion-like appearance. Some lion shaves modify this look by leaving more fur on the tail surface and front legs.
In addition to its cosmetic appeal, the lion shave offers certain benefits according to Dr. Koppe. "Some long-haired cats can develop serious matting without regular shaving or grooming," says the . "Even long-haired cats without mats can suffer through a long, hot Nevada summer with all that hair. A lion shave allows us to trim the hair very closely to the skin, which reduces how often a cat needs to be groomed, keeps the cat cooler, and decreases the amount of hairballs the cat will produce. Additionally, the fact that we can see the cat's skin so clearly also allows us to check for and treat diseases or irritations more easily."
All About Cats considers this form of grooming a welcome addition to its , preventative health and . Dr. Koppe explains, "Doing the lion shave with the cat under general anesthesia is a good option for sensitive cats that need some extra TLC. For certain cats, the stress of grooming is often worse than any perceived stress of anesthesia. This procedure under anesthesia is a good option for cats that do not tolerate traditional grooming." Dr. Koppe added that when cat owners call in asking about routine cat grooming for less sensitive cats, they always refer them to local professional groomers.
