Canada's Secret Offers to EU in Trade Negotiations Leaked, Posted to Trade Justice Network Website
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 01/25/12 -- The Trade Justice Network has made public Canada's initial services and investment offers to the European Union in ongoing free trade negotiations. The documents, which were previously secret but leaked this morning by the Quebec Network on Continental Integration (RQIC), are available on the organization's website: . Both networks will be looking over the documents carefully in the coming days and encourage other organizations, media, academics and international observers to do the same.
Canadian civil society groups concerned about the scope and overly secretive negotiating process of the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) have been calling for Canada's offers to be made public for many months and for the negotiations to be subject to public input prior to the signing of any agreement. The Trade Justice Network, comprising environmental, labour, Indigenous, cultural, social justice and farmers' groups from across Canada, once again urges the federal, as well as provincial and territorial governments, to cease negotiating and allow this public debate to happen.
Now that initial services and investment offers are public, the Trade Justice Network also calls on provincial governments to release their procurement offers to the EU, and to allow public input into these also.
