Minister Raitt Participates in First Ministerial Council Meeting in Colombia
(firmenpresse) - BOGOTA, COLOMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/24/12 -- The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, travelled to Colombia where she and Mr. Rafael Pardo, Minister of Labour for Colombia, held the first Ministerial Council meeting under the Canada-Colombia Agreement on Labour Cooperation. Following the meeting, the Ministers met with local stakeholders to discuss labour issues and the implementation of the Agreement.
"The Government of Canada is proud to have participated in the first Ministerial Council meeting, a key milestone in the successful implementation of the Canada-Colombia Agreement on Labour Cooperation," said Minister Raitt. "The insights gained from stakeholders today will help us to better implement the agreement and address labour issues."
As part of our partnership with Colombia, the Government of Canada has provided more than $1.1 million in labour-related technical assistance funding to local projects. Minister Raitt met with the International Labour Organization to discuss one of the funded projects that aims to improve social dialogue exchanges between government, union and employer representatives, in order to advance labour relations and human rights.
The Labour Program addresses international labour issues by representing Canada in international forums; negotiating and implementing international labour agreements; implementing programs to improve labour governance in developing countries; promoting internationally recognized core labour standards; and managing partnerships and consultations with stakeholders. This leadership is integral to the Government of Canada's overall foreign policy direction to support human rights and democratic governance.
