The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists Launches New Thyroid Awareness Ribbon and Website in Honor of Thyroid Awareness Month
(firmenpresse) - JACKSONVILLE, FL -- (Marketwire) -- 01/17/12 -- January is Thyroid Awareness Month and the (AACE) is introducing a new awareness ribbon as the icon for Thyroid Awareness. Joining the ranks of the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon and the red dress heart campaign, the blue paisley ribbon contains curved shapes that mimic thyroid follicles. Additionally, paisley is often used in ties and scarves, which are tied around the neck, where the thyroid is located.
A new website is also being launched in conjunction with Thyroid Awareness Month. The website is presented by the AACE as an informational source for both people with thyroid dysfunction and the general public to learn more about the thyroid.
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland found just below the Adams' apple. The thyroid produces hormones that influence essentially every organ, tissue and cell in the body. As many as have thyroid dysfunction, although more than half remain undiagnosed.
"We have created many valuable resources on ," said Yehuda Handelsman, MD, FACP, FACE, FNLA, and President of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. "Website visitors can learn how the thyroid works, get answers to frequently asked questions, find the top ten facts about thyroids and learn about specific conditions and treatment options."
, or over-active thyroid, occurs when the thyroid produces too much hormone. Conversely, or an under-active thyroid, occurs when the thyroid does not produce enough hormones. Common symptoms of thyroid dysfunction include fatigue, anxiety, weight gain or loss, and enlargement of the thyroid.
"The thyroid awareness website is a valuable tool to help increase public awareness of the thyroid and improve recognition of symptoms," said Daniel S. Duick, MD, FACP, FACE, Past President of AACE and President of the American College of Endocrinology. "Our ultimate goal is that all cases of thyroid dysfunction be properly diagnosed and treated, and public education must play a significant role in that effort."
The website is presented in a blue paisley theme to complement the new blue paisley thyroid awareness ribbon. Visitors to the website may blue paisley ribbon lapel pin to demonstrate support for thyroid awareness.
Providing physicians and patients with the greatest access to the best care and education on thyroid disease is a core mission for AACE. This is the 18th consecutive year AACE has sponsored January as Thyroid Awareness Month, helping to raise awareness about early detection and proper treatment of thyroid disease.
