Donna Zwicker Appointed Alberta Representative to the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 01/17/12 -- Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, the Honourable Peter Kent, today announced the appointment of Donna Joy Alexander Zwicker as the Alberta representative to the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC).
"I am pleased to appoint Ms. Zwicker as Alberta's representative on the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada," said Minister Kent. "Her knowledge of Alberta history combined with her 25 years of tireless work to preserve and promote it will prove to be a tremendous asset for the Board in its work."
Established in 1919 and supported by Parks Canada, the HSMBC advises the Minister of the Environment on the designation of places, people and events of national historic significance. Together with Parks Canada, it ensures that these subjects of national historic significance are recognized appropriately, both within Canada and abroad.
"It is an honour to be appointed as Alberta's representative to the Historic Sites and Monument Board of Canada," said Ms. Zwicker. "I am pleased to be involved in promoting the history and heritage of our great country."
A Calgary resident, Ms. Zwicker will serve on the HSMBC for a term of three years. She is well qualified to sit on the HSMBC given her strong credentials as a historian, a founder of heritage organizations, and as a leader of local heritage preservation projects. Ms. Zwicker has a B.A. in history from the University of Manitoba and an M.A. in Western Canadian History from the University of Alberta. Her graduate research examined the impact of World War II on women's roles and day-to-day lives in Alberta. A former executive member of the board of the Provincial Historical Society of Alberta, Ms. Zwicker has spent 25 years volunteering for a variety of historical and heritage projects in Alberta. She continues to be a leader for a number of key heritage initiatives in Alberta, including the Calgary Communities Heritage Roundtable and the Crowsnest Historical Society, Museum & Archives.
