70 Per Cent of Workers Will Spend One Working Day Nursing a Hangover This Festive Season

(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 01/13/12 -- Hung-over Britons will cost bosses a staggering GBP 888 million as workers predict their productivity will plummet by half following their annual Christmas bash. With 70 per cent of workers set to party at least two nights over the next seven working days, employers can expect at least one day of lost productivity. This is mainly due to their workforce spending at least three and a half hours nursing a raging hangover the morning after. These festive findings have been revealed in a new report released today by giant, .

The hotel chain carried out a survey involving 6,000 British workers regarding their Christmas work party and the key findings revealed that despite the fact that traditional yuletide office party laid on by bosses is dying out, revellers are still prepared to fork out for Christmas fun in these credit crunch times.

Despite the scrooge-like attitude of some bosses, 47 per cent of employees, refuse to say bah humbug and will be paying for their annual Christmas work do themselves. The average cost for the night out will be GBP 49.79 per event, and with seven out of ten Britons will have at least two work related Christmas parties to pay for this year.

The biggest expense is alcohol with British workers prepared to drink on average 7.3 units of alcohol during their work Christmas night out. Men sup an average of 9.6 units, nearly three times the recommended limit for men and women say they are likely to drink an average of 5.6 units, also well over twice the recommended daily limit of 2 to 3 units.

But the hidden cost to businesses is the fact that further research revealed a quarter of British employees will call in 'sick', the morning after their Christmas works night out. Only one in ten respondents surveyed said that they would be honest and tell their manager that they cannot come into work due to a hangover.

The findings also say that 35 per cent of Britons will use the excuse of catching a bug or virus for covering up a hangover. 21 per cent of workers will lie and use the excuse of having food poisoning, while 17 per cent of workers will use the classic excuse of having a migraine.

The research has also revealed that just one in ten British workers will be booking the day off following their Christmas work night out this year - so that they can nurse their hangover guilt free - down from 20 per cent of workers last year.

Travelodge also found that with more people having to pay their own way, there has been a boost in hotel room bookings, with thrifty party-goers booking a budget hotel room to save cash for partying.

Travelodge spokeswoman, Shakila Ahmed, said, 'Our findings have shown that the Christmas party is one tradition that workers will not allow to die out, even if it means them forking out for it themselves. Over the next seven working days, millions of employees across the country will be painting the town red as they celebrate the end of another stressful working year with colleagues.

'Interestingly this year we have seen a significant rise in bookings at our city centre for this period. Workers across the UK have been planning their big festive work night out well ahead and many have opted to book a saver room and stay over in a Travelodge hotel, rather than getting an expensive cab home. By staying over, the revellers can party hard and not worry about getting home and most importantly, get some much needed shut-eye before starting work again.'

Respondents from the survey were also asked what hangover remedies they take to combat a hangover in the workplace. The top five recommended cures were:

Notes to editor:

The poll was conducted by Travelodge in December 2011 with 6,000 British workers

The GBP 888 million figure calculation has been worked out via the following formula:

Total number of British workers is 29,070,000 million workers

70% of workers are having at least two Christmas work nights out = 70% of 29,070,000 is 20,300,000

Three and half hours is wasted in the workplace due to nursing a hangover. The average hourly salary is GBP 12.50. This equates to GBP 43.75

20,300,000 workers x GBP 43.75 = GBP 888,125,000
