Former Belgrade Artist to Appear on January 26, Exhibit Through February

(firmenpresse) - HALLOWELL, ME -- (Marketwire) -- 01/11/12 -- Granite Hill Estates (GHE), the Kennebec Valley's premiere continuing care retirement community, welcomes Hallowell-based embroiderer, Joyce Whitney, as part of its ongoing Art for Life series. Joyce's work is exhibited in the lobby of the Maine Lodge, and she will appear in a Meet the Artist session on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at 4:00 p.m.

"Joyce's warm heart touches you before you ever see her artwork," said Kathy Jorgensen, Granite Hill's executive director. "She's outgoing, friendly, always ready to tell a story, and one of the people that makes the Granite Hill community so special. Plus, her exhibit is wonderful."

Joyce was born in Rochester, New York, but her family moved to Belgrade, Maine, when she was only three months old. She grew up with two younger brothers, the younger of whom is Robert Page, also a Granite Hill resident and artist. After high school, she attended Gates Business College in Augusta, then went to work for the State Health and Welfare Department as a secretary. She also kept the books for a Waterville car dealership before getting married in 1952 in Winslow.

When Joyce retired, one of her daughters brought her a counted cross-stitch embroidery kit, with the words, "Over the Hill and Ready to Roll!" Starting there, Joyce developed her cross-stitching skills over the years. She's active in Granite Hill's swim and aerobics classes and has three daughters, one son, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

To get to Granite Hill Estates, take exit 109 from the south or 109B from the north off I-95 (Winthrop). Head west on Route 202. Take a left onto Edison Drive. GHE is on the right.
