December Housing Starts in New Brunswick
(firmenpresse) - MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK -- (Marketwire) -- 01/10/12 -- Residential construction activity in New Brunswick's urban centres increased in December according to figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Preliminary data(1) indicate that a total of 204 starts were recorded during the month compared to 149 starts for the same period in 2010.
"The increase in housing starts recorded in December was the result of strong construction activity for multi-dwelling units in provincial urban centres, particularly in Moncton and Fredericton," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New Brunswick. Multiple starts in December were up 74 per cent to 120 units from last year's monthly total. Single starts were up slightly to 84 units.
On a full year basis, a decrease in both single and multiple unit starts was observed in most provincial urban centres, resulting in an overall decline of 17 per cent in total starts for 2011. Multiple starts declined 14 per cent to 1,387 units in 2011 while single starts fell 19 per cent to 1,072 units for the year.
In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in December were up 25 per cent to 14,980 units compared to 12,012 a year ago. Single-detached starts increased ten per cent to 5,506 units, while multiple starts increased 35 per cent to 9,474 units in December. In the Atlantic region, 1,047 new units were started compared to 611 during December 2010.
