GLA Offers High School Students an Opportunity to Study and Volunteer Abroad
New Studies Prove That High School Study Abroad Programs Have a Positive Result and Influence and Help to Better Equip Students for Continued Education
(firmenpresse) - SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/04/12 -- Based on recent research surrounding volunteer programs, it seems that Global Leadership Academy (GLA) is providing the services students need. According to a study conducted by Nancy Leffert and Peter Scales, "Adolescence in America," community service and volunteering have been directly associated with decreased school failure, suspension and dropout and an increase in performance such as grades, participation and attendance.
Global Leadership Adventures is a service-based, study abroad program that offers students the unique opportunity to volunteer and study overseas. "Students are challenged both physically and mentally," says Mike Shangkuan, Managing Director of GLA. "High school is a critical time in a person's development, and it is through the challenges GLA presents that students return home transformed. They change their views of themselves, the community they served, and the world. GLA exists to fill a need in society."
It is through programs like GLA that students begin to gain confidence and will avoid risky behaviors such as drug use, according to "Teens as Volunteers, Research-to-Results."
Furthermore, the programs students attend lead them to a better understanding of the world. GLA gives students hands-on experiences that allow them to assimilate into the culture, increasing their understanding of other societies. "Often the biggest changes to the student come months, if not years after their GLA experience, as students connect what they learned at GLA to life back home," Shangkuan says.
offers high school student community service programs in 11 developing countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. GLA operates in countries with cultures significantly different from America and places students in an authentic village away from tourism. Programs last from one to six weeks. Each has the same four key components: community service, hands-on learning, adventure, and discussion and reflection. During the weekdays in the mornings, students will work on a service project (building a school, teaching children, protecting the environment, etc.). During the afternoons, the students will have an activity to help them better understand the social, historical, and cultural context of that country. At night, group directors lead the students to discuss, reflect and process what they learned. On the weekends, students go on longer excursions to discover more of the country.
