The CBSA Seizes Approximately $2 Million in Heroin
(firmenpresse) - HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/22/11 -- The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) seized five kilograms of heroin at the Port of Halifax, with an estimated street value of $2 million.
The shipment was initially discovered by CBSA officers with the use of x-ray technology on May 16, 2011, while conducting marine container examinations. The container had 772 cardboard boxes of various food products and household goods. The heroin was hidden in plastic bags of flour balls within smaller sealed clear plastic bags. The container originated in India and was destined for Toronto, Ontario. CBSA works closely with our enforcement partners such as the RCMP to keep contraband goods off our streets and keep our communities safe.
The drugs were turned over to the National Ports Enforcement Team (NPET) which is comprised of the CBSA, the RCMP and the Halifax Regional Police for further investigation. This seizure prevented a significant amount of illegal and highly addictive drugs from reaching Canadian communities.
"This seizure is an excellent example of the outstanding work done by our officers," said Andrew LeFrank, the Regional Director General for CBSA Atlantic Region. "Stopping smuggling of illegal drugs like this at our borders plays a big part in making our communities safer."
