(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 12/21/11 -- The National Health Council (NHC) announced that Larry Hausner, MBA, will be the 2012 chairperson of the NHC's Board of Directors. Hausner is Chief Executive Officer of the American Diabetes Association, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia.

Hausner has been with the American Diabetes Association since October 2007, bringing more than 20 years of extensive management experience in nonprofits, coupled with a strong understanding of mission-driven organizations. His work there has been marked with a renewed commitment to advancing the field of diabetes research and a strong focus on advocacy efforts, local programs, public awards initiatives, and prevention programs to both improve the quality of life for those living with diabetes and for those at risk of getting this disease

Hausner is a recent Co-Chair of the Centers for Public Health Roundtable, a member of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) strategic planning strategy group and recently served on the U.S. delegation to the United Nations High Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases. He was a recipient of a 2011 VIDA (Vision, Innovation, Dedication, and Advocacy) National Hispanic Leadership Award for his leadership in expanding the reach of association services in Hispanic communities, and a 2010 Impact Award from the Invisible Disabilities Association for leading the charge in helping people living with diabetes through local and national education, research and support.

Hausner earned a master's degree in marketing management from the University of Rhode Island. He also holds a bachelor of science degree in marketing with a minor in accounting from the same university. He also studied performance management systems and governance as leadership at Harvard University and strategic planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The National Health Council (NHC) is the only organization of its kind that brings together all segments of the health community to provide a united voice for the more than 133 million people with chronic diseases and disabilities and their family caregivers.

In the coming year, the priority issues for NHC will include

Working with various federal agencies to define essential health benefits, required under the health care reform law, in a way to balance effective coverage with appropriate cost

Encouraging the development of new treatments and diagnostic tools for people with chronic conditions through passage of HR 3497, the MODDERN Cures Act

Encouraging sustained funding for federal health programs and health research

Supporting comparative effectiveness research and the work of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)

Made up of more than 100 national health-related organizations and businesses, the National Health Council's core membership includes approximately 50 of the nation's leading patient advocacy groups, which control its governance. Other members include professional and membership associations, nonprofit organizations with an interest in health, and major pharmaceutical, medical device, health insurance, and biotechnology companies.
