Jupiter's 215 West Announces Winners of Design Contest With Harrington College of Design

Located on Washington Street in the heart of the Chicago Loop, thousands of pedestrians and commuters pass 215 West each week. Based on this, Jupiter asked students in Harrington's Conceptual Sketching for Interior Design course, led by James C. Smith, Adjunct Instructor of Interior Design, to present creative exterior solutions that would capitalize on the area's commuter traffic and create an identity to draw people into 215 West's lobby.
Working in teams of two, the Harrington students created drawings of their solutions and determined the associated costs and fabrication details. In formulating their ideas, the Harrington students considered aesthetics, climate, signage ordinances, lighting, and music. Their concepts also needed to work within budget constraints and electrical availability. , the developer of 215 West, and Jupiter Communities reviewed the contest submissions and selected Erin Costello and Justin Jungsuk Ko as the winning team.

Ms. Costello and Mr. Ko's design solution incorporates colorful stanchion-mounted vertical banners flanking the lobby entrance and light projections on the sidewalk to draw attention to 215 West. Their design stood out to the judges because it would provide 215 West with added visibility during both the day and night and would visually impact pedestrians, passing cars, and people working in the surrounding office buildings. The use of banners and light projections would allow 215 West to refresh the message periodically. Finally, the sleek look of Ms. Costello and Mr. Ko's concept reflected the modern aesthetic and sophisticated nature central to 215 West.
