Sun Life Financial Centre Achieves LEED(R) for Existing Building GOLD Certification
A First for Ottawa One of Just 20 in Canada
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/19/11 -- Bentall Kennedy (Canada) LP announced today that they have achieved Leadership in Energy Efficiency and Design for Existing Buildings (LEED® EB) GOLD certification for the Sun Life Financial Centre in Ottawa. Sun Life Financial Centre is the first office complex in Ottawa to achieve LEED® EB Gold certification.
To reach this milestone, Bentall Kennedy in partnership with Sun Life Financial and AIMco, the building's owners, undertook significant physical and operational improvements in water efficiency, indoor environmental quality such as green cleaning, and waste management over the past three years to increase occupant comfort and satisfaction while improving energy performance, and reducing the environmental impact of the Centre.
Sun Life Financial Centre secured the LEED® EB GOLD certification by achieving the following benchmarks for measurement: proven energy performance in comparison to similar buildings; optimal location where over 75% of occupants get to work via public transportation or walk, bike or carpool; indoor air quality that delivers optimum volumes of fresh air; a green cleaning program that protects occupants from chemical toxins; and, sustainable property management that includes sustainable procurement, practices and waste diversion programs.
What sets the Sun Life Financial Centre apart from other LEED® certified buildings?
Most LEED® certified buildings in Canada are new builds (certified under LEED® for New Construction). LEED® for New Construction awards the predicted performance of a building, not actual performance, meaning that it enables but does not guarantee a high performing building. In achieving LEED® EB, the Sun Life Financial Centre is certifying that it is a leader in building performance.
