Getting Things Done for Canadians: Harper Government Delivering on Democratic Reform Commitments

ID: 1066901

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/16/11 -- The Harper Government delivered on two key democratic reform commitments with the Royal Assent of the Budget Implementation Act, which contains measures eliminating the per-vote subsidy for political parties, and with the Royal Assent of the Fair Representation Act, which updates the formula allocating House of Commons seats to provinces.

The Government of Canada committed to bringing greater transparency to government by phasing out the per-vote subsidy for political parties. With the Royal Assent of the 2011 Budget Implementation Act, the Government is delivering on this commitment by phasing out the $30 million per year tax-payer subsidy of political parties.

"Political parties should do their own fundraising, not live off of taxpayer funded handouts," said Minister of State for Democratic Reform Tim Uppal. "Canadians should be able to choose whether or not they want to fund political activities."

Since 2006, the Government of Canada has been absolutely clear in its intention to address the serious and increasing underrepresentation of Canadians in the fast-growing provinces of Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta. With the Royal Assent of the Fair Representation Act, the Government is delivering on this commitment by moving every single Canadian closer to representation by population with a truly national, fair for all provinces, representation strategy.

"Our Government's most important priority is jobs and economic growth," said Minister Uppal. "In addition to securing Canada's economic security, Canadians gave our Government a strong mandate to deliver fairer representation for the sixty-percent of Canadians who live in our fastest growing provinces."

"For far too long Ontarians, British Columbians, and Albertans have been seriously and unfairly underrepresented in the House of Commons," added Minister Uppal. "The passage of the Fair Representation Act means that, after this decade's representation update, every single Canadian will move closer to representation by population."

The number of seats in the House of Commons and the electoral boundaries within Canada's provinces are updated every ten years after each decennial census. This decade's update begins February 8th, 2012 and is scheduled to be complete by 2015.

"Canadians sent our Government to Ottawa with a mandate to deliver, and today we are delivering," said Minister Uppal.
