Minister Raitt Congratulates Algoma Central Marine and the Captains and Chiefs Association on First Agreement
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/15/11 -- Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, congratulated Algoma Central Marine, a division of Algoma Central Corporation, and the Captains and Chiefs Association for successfully reaching a first collective agreement.
"I am very pleased that Algoma Central Marine and the Captains and Chiefs Association have reached a negotiated agreement without interruption to services," said Minister Raitt. "Strong labour-management relations benefit our country's economic prosperity and the economic security of Canadians."
The Captains and Chiefs Association includes 56 captains, masters and chief engineers who are responsible for the operation of ships and diversified ship repair throughout the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway. The parties reached an agreement with the assistance of a mediator from the Labour Program's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. The collective agreement, valid from March 1, 2011, to February 28, 2013, is the first agreement between both parties.
The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service provides dispute resolution and dispute prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code to achieve a collective agreement and avoid a work stoppage.
