REMINDER/Available for Comment: DFO Calls for Reduction in Seal Quota, IFAW Says Stop Fiddling
(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/15/11 -- According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), a recommendation by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) to reduce the allowable catch of harp seals by 25 percent, , is another example of half-measures that make no sense in reality. The animal welfare group says that DFO is confirming what the IFAW has said all along: that harp seals are suffering from the effects of climate change and shrinking ice habitat. IFAW says that given the nearly non-existent markets for seal products, a far better move would be to end the dying sealing industry altogether, compensate sealers appropriately, and protect seals from the threats of climate change and commercial exploitation.
Sheryl Fink, Director of IFAW's Seal Program and David Lavigne, IFAW's Science Advisor, are available for comment.
