Grants International Inc.: December 31 EI Refund Deadline Looms for Canadians
Those Working for Family Business Likely Qualify
(firmenpresse) - WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/14/11 -- There are only days remaining this year for Canadian businesses and individuals to claim a refund on Employment Insurance premiums.
"Hundreds of thousands of working Canadians pay into EI every year even though they are likely ineligible to receive benefits," said Darren Earn, President of Grants International. "If you're working for the family business, then you're likely ineligible to collect EI. For those people, it's definitely worth asking if you are entitled to a refund."
The government allows people to claim refunds on up to three years of EI premiums in addition to the current calendar year. December 31 is the deadline for eligible claimants to apply for refunds on premiums paid from 2008 to 2011. As of January 1, 2012 you'll be disqualified from collecting 2008 premiums.
"The government likes to encourage people to pay EI premiums regardless of their employment situation. Then, when you're unemployed and make a claim, the same government can turn you down simply because you're working for a family member," says Earn whose company has successfully helped more than 15,000 individuals and businesses obtain EI refunds from Ottawa. "If you can't collect EI, then you shouldn't be paying for it."
The same goes for business owners. If you employ a relative and are paying EI premiums on behalf of that person, you should consider making a claim for a refund.
There are more than 850,000 family enterprises in the country, meaning Canadians over-contribute approximately $1 billion in EI premiums every year. The government will only refund up to three years of EI refunds in addition to the current calendar year, so it's vital that Canadians get their applications before the end of the year.
Over the past decade and a half, Grants International has helped thousands of clients save more than $75 million in EI refunds, as well as exemptions from having to pay premiums in the future. The company doesn't charge if you don't get a refund. Refunds can range from about $1,000 to nearly $8,000 per family member. Stopping payments unilaterally before obtaining official documentation from the government could result in substantial penalties and you will lose the opportunity to apply for a refund.
"We make it simple: it only takes 15 minutes to apply," explains Earn. "Just fill out a form and send it in to us to ensure your application is submitted before the deadline. There's nothing to lose and plenty to gain."
Grants International offers free consultations by phone and web to see if you qualify for an EI refund. Just visit or call toll-free 1-888-999-2221.
