Invasive Species Centre Sponsors First International Terrestrial Invasive Plant Conference
(firmenpresse) - PETERBOROUGH, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/13/11 -- In this age of increasing global connectivity, development pressures and climatic change, the short and long-term impact of invasive species to Ontario's biodiversity, society and economy is a pressing issue. Ontario has the largest number of non-native plant species in Canada and is at greater risk of new invasive species becoming established than any other region in Canada.
To help address this urgent problem, the Invasive Species Centre, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Ontario Invasive Plant Council, the Invasive Species Research Institute and Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters are partnering to host the first ever International Terrestrial Invasive Plant Species (TIPS) Conference.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. Daniel Simberloff is a Professor of Environmental Studies in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His books include The Encyclopedia of Biological Invasions, Ecological Communities: Conceptual Issues and the Evidence and Strangers in Paradise: Impact and Management of Nonindigenous Species in Florida.

The Invasive Species Centre (ISC) is an independent not for profit corporation. The ISC's vision is to become a leader in addressing the threats from invasive species in the context of a changing environment through cooperation among government agencies, the private sector and the public.
The Ontario Invasive Plant Council (OIPC) is a non-profit, multi-agency organization founded in April 2007 in response to the growing threat of invasive plants. The OIPC is housed at the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Conservation Centre in Peterborough. The Council provides leadership, expertise and a forum to engage and empower Ontarians to take action on invasive plant issues.
