WWF Disappointed by Canada's Withdrawal from Kyoto Accord

ID: 1065138

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/12/11 -- WWF-Canada today expressed disappointment in the announcement from federal Environment Minister Peter Kent that Canada will withdraw from the Kyoto Accord.

Climate Change is an urgent global problem that requires an urgent global solution. A binding international agreement offers our best and perhaps only hope to act quickly enough to avoid the worst effects of climate change. "Canada's decision to withdraw makes achieving a global deal including all major emitters more difficult", said Josh Laughren, Director, Climate and Energy for WWF-Canada. "Other nations will now have to continue to develop a global solution without Canada."

This is unfortunate, since Canada has perhaps the best renewable energy potential in the world, terrific manufacturing know-how, and leading edge experience in solutions like a carbon tax (BC), Feed-in-Tariffs (ON), hydropower expertise (QC), and technology innovation (AB) that could help the world reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

WWF-Canada will continue to work with our international colleagues to support a global agreement to tackle climate change, and will continue to support and advocate for actions to reduce emissions in Canada, including with all levels of government, businesses, and individuals.
