Minister MacKay Attends NATO Ministerial Meeting
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/08/11 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, concluded his participation in a two-day North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Foreign Ministerial Meeting that took place on December 7-8, 2011, in Brussels, Belgium.
As Canada's representative at the meeting, Minister MacKay led the Canadian delegation and met with foreign ministers from Allied nations to discuss security and defence issues.
"Canada is a leader in the NATO alliance - an Alliance which is a cornerstone of our collective defence and security," said Minister MacKay. "As demonstrated by NATO's recent success in Libya, Canada and the Alliance continue to play an important role in the advancement of security and stability regionally and around the world. Discussions at the meeting covered a range of issues such as the international mission in Afghanistan, including the transition of security responsibilities to Afghan National Security Forces, and lessons learned from the Alliance's successful operation in Libya.
This meeting is also a prelude to the Chicago NATO Summit in May 2012 where NATO's post-2014 engagement in Afghanistan will be a main topic of discussion.
