Ixia's iSimCity Hosts Lippis Report 10/40GE Tests for Industry's Only Comparative Report on Switch Performance and Power Consumption

(firmenpresse) - CALABASAS, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/05/11 -- (NASDAQ: XXIA), the leading global provider of converged IP and wireless network test solutions, and The Lippis Report today announced the completion of the third round in a series of open industry data center and cloud fabric network performance and power consumption tests. The tests, the first of their kind, provide the industry with real-world comparative performance and power consumption data across several 10 and 40 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) switches.

This round of tests reviewed top-of-rack (ToR) and core switches from various leading switch vendors. The top of rack switches tested were:

Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 900-40X

Arista 7124SX 10G SFP Data Center Switch and 7050S-64 10/40GE Data Center Switch

BLADE Network Technologies (an IBM Company) IBM BNT RackSwitch G8124 and IBM BNT RackSwitch G8264

Brocade VDXTM 6720-24 Data Center Switch

Dell/Force10 S-Series S4810

Extreme Summit X670V

Hitachi Cable Apresia15000-64XL-PSR

Mellanox/Voltaire® VantageTM 6048

Core switches involved in the tests were:

Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 10K

Arista 7504 Series Data Center Switch

Extreme BlackDiamiond X8

Juniper Network EX Series EX8200 Ethernet Switch.

The data center and cloud fabric test was open to and free for all vendors of 10Gbps and 40Gbps switching equipment, both modular and fixed configurations. The tests took place during the week of October 10th 2011 at Ixia's iSimCity facility in Santa Clara, CA. The test employed Ixia's Xcellon-Flex™ Accelerated Performance, Xcellon-Flex 10/40GE, and Xcellon-Flex 4x40GE Full Emulation load modules transmitting traffic generated by Ixia's IxNetwork™ test application. The tests measured throughput performance, latency, jitter, congestion, and power consumption. Each supplier was allocated lab time to run the test with the assistance of an Ixia engineer. Each switch vendor configured their equipment while Ixia engineers ran the test and logged the resulting data.

Some of the top conclusions derived from this round of the Lippis Report tests were:

- there have been 15 new switches since Interop 2011.

-ToR switches will decrease to the hundreds of nanoseconds within two years, and PHY-less designs are here to stay. Core switch times will decrease to nanoseconds at 40 and 100Gbps line rates.

- five ToR switches support 40GE today, and all core switches possess backplane capacity for some combination of 40 and 100GE technology.

The complete report, including additional relevant findings, is located at the following link: .

The test results communicate credibility, competence, openness, and trust to potential buyers of 10GE and 40GE data center switching equipment as they are open to all suppliers and based on repeatable RFC and custom-based criteria.

Ixia's award-winning IxNetwork is designed to test network infrastructure, capacity, scalability, and convergence using its scaled protocol emulation.

Ixia's Xcellon load modules are designed to adapt and fully support the data center convergence and cloud computing paradigms that are changing the dynamics of business IT. They validate the performance of routers, switches, web application servers, application-aware firewalls, application delivery controllers, and security platforms.

Ixia is the only measurement solution provider that maximizes ROI by supporting the combination of traffic forwarding, cloud simulation, and power consumption characterization on a single hardware platform. Ixia has the industry's highest-density 10/40GE combo card and easily provides extremely high-port-counts to fully load top of rack switches.

The Lippis tests covered RFC 2544 throughput/latency, RFC 2889 congestion control, RFC 3918 IP multicast forwarding latency, and ATIS-based power consumption for each switch.

"Today's data center and cloud fabric network design implementations require high forwarding performance and low latency under north-south and east-west flows, low power consumption, and a minimum number of network tiers," said Nick Lippis, founder of The Lippis Report. "The joint Lippis and Ixia tests provide industry benchmarks to compare 10/40 GE switch performance results to ensure that specifications are met."

"Ethernet has become the fabric for data center convergence and cloud computing. IT business leaders require independent, meaningful, and repeatable performance metrics to compare vendor equipment as they evolve and optimize their network," said Atul Bhatnagar, president and CEO of Ixia. "Ixia's advanced load modules and test applications enable companies such as The Lippis Report to test city-scale networking devices and infrastructure to ensure not only equipment performance, but also how the devices behave under real-world networks."
