Leading Life Science CEOs to Provide Detailed, Personal Accounts of Their Strategic Leadership Direction and How It Impacted Key Industry Innovations

(firmenpresse) - BERKELEY, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/01/11 -- The 2011 UC Berkeley BioExec Institute final fall module will take place Dec. 7-8 at the Haas School of Business.

Bringing together executive leaders in the life sciences from around the globe to address strategies that will help manage business issues of moving innovative science to the marketplace, this two-day module will focus on growing value in biopharma through strategic deal-making and CEO leadership.

"By looking at a variety of significant topics, such as preparing an asset and a biotech company to get the best deal possible, determining how a molecule's commercial value impacts a deal and making sure a contract reflects business realities, executives attending this session of the UC Berkeley BioExec Institute will be armed to negotiate savvy deals," said Melinda Richter, found and CEO, Prescience International, and executive director, San Jose BioCenter.

Delivered by top executives and industry specialists from the Deloitte Life Science Practice, UC Berkeley Center for Executive Education and Prescience International, the Institute deal-making session will feature Rod Ferguson, managing director, Panorama Capital; Tassos E. Gianakakos, senior vice president & chief business officer, MAP Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; Patrick Hagan, senior consultant, Deloitte Recap LLC; Paul J. Hastings, president & CEO, OncoMed Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; Michael S. Johnson, practice leader, Deloitte Recap LLC; Alexander Schuth, MD, associate director business development, head of Neuroscience Partnering, Genentech, Inc.; Laura O. Spiegelman, Spiegelman Life Sciences.

The following day, Dec. 8, UC Berkeley BioExec Institute participants will have the opportunity to be a CEO for the Day -- the final session of the 2011 Institute's series that puts participants in the "corner office" and challenges them to make strategic decisions to move companies to success.

According to Richter, the session will provide participants with simulated real world executive scenarios and interactions.

"Being a successful CEO is a mix of wisdom, team talent and timing. For our last session this year, we have assembled some of the most respected life science CEOs to share their stories and also to challenge our participants to make strategic decisions -- based on little to no information. They will also have the opportunity to role play in situations offering contentious board members as well as disgruntled employees," said Richter. "We also offer up some friendly competition and award the Winner of CEO for a Day based on input by BioExec Faculty and life science CEOs."

In addition to UC Berkeley BioExec Institute instructors, executives taking part in CEO for a Day include Keith Donnermeyer, national life science leader, Deloitte; Peter Hirth, CEO, Plexxicon; Michael S. Johnson, practice leader, Deloitte Recap LLC; Susan Molineaux, CEO, Calithera; Grant Pickering, president & CEO, Juvaris; Entrepreneur in Residence, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers; Jay Sheppard, President & CEO, Nextwave Pharmaceuticals; Dave Summa, managing director, Technology Pathfinders and Eric Walczykowski, managing director, Deloitte Recap.
