Yarmouth Veterinary Center Announces Small Animal Care Services
(firmenpresse) - YARMOUTH, ME -- (Marketwire) -- 12/01/11 -- Yarmouth Veterinary Center has announced that the practice provides veterinary care services for small animals, including rabbits, ferrets, pocket pets, birds and exotic pets. The center's veterinarians also provide wellness care, emergency care and surgical care for cats and dogs, including pet grooming and pet boarding. The animal vet center serves the communities of Brunswick, Cumberland, Falmouth and Freeport and Portland.
Dr. Louise LeBoeuf, a veterinarian and co-founder of , announced that the provides veterinary care services for small pets. These services include semi-annual wellness check-ups that specifically address the unique wellness needs of rabbits, ferrets, pockets pets, birds and exotics.
"We are proud to provide veterinary care services for small animals," said Dr. LeBouef. "Small animals make wonderful pets, but they have unique health needs. Our goal is to ensure they live a healthy, active life by providing specialized attention dedicated to keeping them healthy."
For example, ferrets frequently suffer from pancreatic tumors and adrenal gland disease. According to Dr. LeBouef, these health conditions can be difficult to detect without specialized wellness care until it is "too late" to provide treatment.
"While a pet owner may not realize that their pet has an underlying health condition because there are no obvious symptoms, our veterinary team has received specialized training to identify these health issues early," said Dr. Peter Smith, a and co-founder of the . Dr. Smith and Dr. LeBouef founded the animal vet clinic over 25 years ago when they converted part of their house into a three and a half room pet hospital. Today, the clinic has a new, state-of the-art home and the veterinary team remains committed to providing small animal care for the Yarmouth community through wellness exams and pet owner education.
"An important part of our work as is educating pet owners about the health needs of smaller animals including exotic pets," said Dr. LeBouef. "While there's a lot of easily available information about caring for dogs and cats, finding reliable information on small animal care can be more difficult. Small animals have very specific needs, and our goal is to help pet owners meet these needs, whether that includes basic grooming or complex dietary requirements."
For example, ferrets, rabbits, birds and reptiles all have specific housing needs. Brightly colored birds and reptiles are indigenous to tropical and subtropical regions, and pet owners must create a similar housing environment for them.
"Since we live in a non-tropical weather region, pet owners will try to duplicate a warm, wet environment for many reptiles," said Dr. Smith. "Ferret and rabbit owners need to create an environment that is filled with plenty of stimulating toys in order to keep their pets from chewing through their housing."
The veterinarians provide pre-ownership counseling for individuals who are interested in adopting an exotic pet or small animal. The goal of this counseling is to help prospective pet owners become familiar with the needs of their future pets and understand how to prepare their home and meet their dietary needs.
