Parks Canada announces contribution for infrastructure improvements at site

(firmenpresse) - WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/30/11 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, the Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Public Safety Minister and Member of Parliament for Provencher, today announced that the Government of Canada will be investing in infrastructure improvements to the Gault Building at the Exchange District National Historic Site.

"The funding announced today for the conservation of the Gault building represents an important investment in our city's heritage," said Minister Toews. "I am pleased with our Government's continued support for projects like this, which assist with the preservation of Winnipeg's historic places."

The Exchange District, designated a national historic site in 1996, is a warehousing and business centre of some 150 buildings covering 20 city blocks in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba. Most of the buildings within the Exchange District were constructed between 1880 and 1913, during which time Winnipeg grew to become the gateway to Canada's West and a centre of grain and wholesale trade, finance and manufacturing. The Gault Building was built in 1900 to accommodate the western expansion of Montreal's dry goods wholesaler A.F. Gault and Co.. The building now houses Artspace, a non-profit arts service organisation.

Through Parks Canada's National Historic Sites Cost-Sharing Program, the Government of Canada will be contributing up to $22,140 for the preparation of technical and planning documents for the conservation of the Gault Building's historic windows.

"One of our Government's major objectives is to inspire Canadians to develop strong and meaningful connections with Canada's national treasures," said Minister Kent. "Our national historic sites are vital to our history, our identity as Canadians, and our tourism industry. By investing in them and by building lasting relationships with the community groups that operate them, we ensure that they will continue to help support local economies and encourage more Canadians to explore and discover our national heritage."

"This funding is a very exciting step for the Gault building," said Mr. Randy Joynt, Executive Director of Artspace. "The windows are a huge part of the building's heritage value within the Exchange District, so this investment is important to preserving that legacy."

Parks Canada's Cost-Sharing Program reflects the Government of Canada's dedication to protect Canada's heritage through funding towards the conservation of our national historic sites. In this centennial year, Parks Canada is pleased to continue its efforts to ensure that Canada's historic and cultural heritage is protected for the enjoyment, education and appreciation of all Canadians, today and in the future.
