FCAC Issues Consumer Alert: Beware of Scammers Pretending to Represent FCAC
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/25/11 -- The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) warns all Canadians to beware of telephone calls, mail, emails and websites that claim to be from FCAC. FCAC does not initiate contact with consumers.
FCAC has learned of a suspicious incident involving a telephone call from someone who claimed to represent FCAC while making an offer to consolidate credit card debts. The caller had details about the credit card debts of the person called. The caller also claimed this was an approved government program.
Another misrepresentation involves a suspicious website that offers to provide credit reports for free. The website prominently displays FCAC's name and logo, even though FCAC has absolutely no involvement and does not endorse the site. It appears that consumers would be prompted to provide many personal and financial details in order to obtain the service.
These are likely phishing scams that could result in identity theft and fraud.
