Canada Taking its Leadership in Development Effectiveness to Major Conference in South Korea

ID: 1060375

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/25/11 -- The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, will lead Canada's delegation at the Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness (HLF4) in Busan, South Korea, from November 29th to December 1st, 2011. Canada will join delegations from around the world to review global progress in improving the impact and effectiveness of aid.

Canada is recognized globally for its commitment to effective and accountable development. Minister Oda will highlight Canada's leadership with a focus on aid accountability, value-for-dollars and real results, as well as the action Canada has taken in advancing global progress.

"I am proud to take part in this important, high-level, global conference. The Conference agenda shows that Canada's focus on accountability to get results for those living in poverty has been adopted by the international donor community," said Minister Oda. "We must ensure that our future efforts make a concrete difference in the lives of people in need."

Canada will highlight how Canada's G8 Muskoka initiative on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health and the UN Commission on Information and Accountability for Women's and Children's Health, co-chaired by Prime Minister Harper, set a new standard in accountability in development.

Canada's focus on accountability at the G8 and on maternal and child health has been described as game-changing. Minister Oda will speak of the importance of international stakeholders working together to deliver and monitor results, commit and track resources, and enhance mutual accountability.

Earlier this week, Canada and the World Health Organization hosted a high-level forum of international experts on delivering results for women and children to identify real steps needed to strengthen accountability and transparency.

The Busan Conference will be attended by a range of development actors including civil society organisations, emerging economies, and the private sector. Canada will emphasize that development must be led by developing countries themselves as the basis for achieving durable results.
