(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/25/11 -- Sixty schools from across Ontario were recognized for ongoing academic improvement and achievement at the annual in Toronto Thursday.

The annual awards honour school teams (teachers, principals, support staff, and volunteers) in three categories of academic achievement. The Garfield Weston Award for Improvement in Academics recognizes elementary school teams that have experienced the fastest, most consistent improvement in their students' academic performance over the past five years. The Garfield Weston Award for Excellence in Language Arts recognizes elementary school teams whose students have excelled in reading and writing over the last five school years as reflected in their results on the Grade 3 and Grade 6 provincewide tests. The Imperial Oil Foundation Award for Excellence in Mathematics honours elementary school teams whose students have excelled in mathematics over the last five school years as reflected in their results on the Grade 3 and Grade 6 provincewide tests.

More than 300 educators from 53 different schools attended the reception and awards dinner. They are among the 5,222 educators representing 1,017 schools from across the country that have been honoured at the awards, presented by the Fraser Institute since 2005.

"At these schools, teams of dedicated teachers, administrators, and support staff have found effective ways to inspire learning and academic excellence in their students," said Peter Cowley, Fraser Institute director of school performance studies.

"They show that scholastic success is achievable in every school across Ontario."

The Awards for Excellence are based on an analysis of student results data from the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) assessment. Out of 2,733 elementary schools whose test results were analyzed only the top 30 performers in each category were invited to participate in the awards.

The school team from D.A. Gordon Public School of Wallaceburg won the Garfield Weston Award for Improvement in Academics along with a $3,000 prize. Runner-up school teams from Heron Park Junior Public School of Toronto and St. Brother Andre Catholic School of Gloucester each received a $1,000 prize.

The school team from Sathya Sai School of Toronto won the Garfield Weston Award for Excellence in Language Arts along with a $3,000 prize, and was also second runner-up for the Imperial Oil Foundation Award for Excellence in Mathematics, which came with an additional $1,000 prize. Runner-up school teams for the Garfield Weston Award for Excellence in Language Arts, both of which received a $1,000 prize, were from Ecole elementaire catholique Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys of Markham and Kennedy Public School of Toronto. The school team from Kennedy Public School was also named first runner-up for the Imperial Oil Foundation Award for Excellence in Mathematics, making this the seventh year in a row the school has been honoured with an Award for Excellence.

The school team from Seneca Hill Public School of Toronto, which has also been recognized at the awards every year since 2005, won the Imperial Oil Foundation Award for Excellence in Mathematics along with a $3,000 prize, and was also named a School of Distinction for the Garfield Weston Award for Excellence in Language Arts. Runners-up for the Imperial Oil Foundation Award for Excellence in Mathematics were school teams from Kennedy Public School of Toronto and Sathya Sai School of Toronto, both of which received a $1,000 prize.

All of the remaining school teams received School of Distinction recognition. The complete list of winners, by category, follows on the next page.

"The Awards for Excellence recognize school teams whose skill, dedication, and plain hard have paid off in academic improvement or high performance," Cowley said.

"The list of honourees includes school teams from public, private, and Catholic schools, urban and rural schools, and schools serving families with moderate incomes as well as those serving more affluent families. In short, these outstanding educators have shown that academic excellence and constant improvement is possible in every school across Ontario."
