Addiction is a family disease; one that gets passed from generation to generation and, studies show, children who experiment with drugs and alcohol by age 14 are 6 times more likely to develop a lifetime problem with substance in adulthood. Canada's Edgewood Treatment Center in Nanaimo offers educational program for children of parents who are struggling with addiction. Edgewood's Supervisor of Family Programs, Dale MacIntyre states, "The Bounce Back program for children is the first of its kind in Canada."

Based on a successful children's program at the Betty Ford Center in California, Edgewood's Bounce Back program is designed to deal with the needs of children 7 to 12 years in families where there is substance abuse. For children in such families, daily life means coping with disappointment, stress and embarrassment; they often feel responsible for the struggles of their parents. Bounce Back helps children see it's not their fault.

In a safe supportive environment using games, role play, art, videos and group discussion, children are encouraged to share their feelings. They see they are not alone; they learn how alcoholism and addiction affect the family and they develop new ways of coping with problems, safely. Bounce Back focuses on building strengths and developing resiliency so that children can restore balance in their lives. By helping children before they reach the age of experimentation with drugs and alcohol, Edgewood gives them a better chance at beating the odds.

These children can avoid becoming a statistic.
