Jake Gaudaur Veterans' Trophy Presented to Andre Durie
(firmenpresse) - BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/23/11 -- Veterans Affairs Canada and the Canadian Football League presented the second annual Jake Gaudaur Veterans' Trophy today to Andre Durie of the Toronto Argonauts.
"Our Government is proud to partner with the Canadian Football League to engage sports fans, youth and all Canadians in remembering the significant contributions of Canada's Veterans," said Veterans Affairs Minister Steven Blaney. "We are pleased to present the trophy this year to Andre Durie. He is a deserving winner of this award and clearly demonstrates the attributes Canada's Veterans are known for-strength, perseverance, comradeship, courage and contribution to community."
Andre Durie was chosen as this year's recipient of the Jake Gaudaur Veterans' Trophy thanks to his efforts as a leader on and off the field, as well as the perseverance he has demonstrated in recovering from a devastating injury. Mr. Durie's teammates look to him for guidance and his community benefits from his tireless work in the Argonauts' many community programs, crusading against bullying and encouraging kids to stay healthy and fit.
"Andre is more than a great player, a tremendous teammate and a leader when it comes to community service," said Mark Cohon, Commissioner of the Canadian Football League. "He is a testament to perseverance and courage, an inspiration to those around him and worthy of being honoured in the company of true Canadian heroes, our Veterans."
Today's presentation was held at the George Derby Centre in Burnaby, British Columbia, with many resident Veterans in attendance. For those who were unable to attend, the ceremony was simulcast on screens in their living areas throughout the centre. The Jake Gaudaur Veterans' Trophy and Grey Cup remained after the presentation ceremony to give residents and families a photo opportunity. CFL players and alumni then toured the facility to visit with resident Veterans.
"You could see the excitement in the eyes of our Veterans as they had a chance to see and touch the Grey Cup and receive thanks from these tremendous athletes for their service to Canada," said Janice Mitchell, executive director of the George Derby Centre.
The Jake Gaudaur Veterans' Trophy is part of the Canadian Football League 2011 Veterans' Tribute which is supported by Veterans Affairs Canada through the Community Engagement Partnership Fund. The Tribute includes national broadcasts of tributes to Veterans at CFL games and in-stadium activities commemorating the achievements and sacrifices of Canadian Veterans during times of war, military conflict and peace.
The Jake Gaudaur Veterans' Trophy will be awarded annually to a CFL player who demonstrates the attributes shared by Canada's Veterans.
