Intercepting Impaired Driving is a Winning Play this Grey Cup Weekend
(firmenpresse) - OAKVILLE, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/23/11 -- As football fans across the country prepare for the B.C. Lions and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to square off in the 99th Grey Cup, MADD Canada is asking everyone to plan an interception play against impaired driving.
"We hope everyone enjoys the championship game but please do so safely," said Denise Dubyk, MADD Canada's National President. "If you're going to enjoy a few drinks while watching the game, please plan ahead for a sober ride home. Take a cab or public transit, arrange a designated driver or plan to stay over."
Ms. Dubyk also encouraged Canadians to be aware of those around you and call 911 if you see a driver you suspect is impaired. "It's another effective way that we can all help make our communities safer from impaired driving," she said.
The message to call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers is the cornerstone of MADD Canada's Campaign 911 program. Through signs, billboards, public service announcements and other materials, Campaign 911 provides the public with information on the possible signs of an impaired driver, tips on what to do and safety reminders.
"The challenge when this program started in 2007 was the misperception that impaired driving was not a serious enough reason to call 911 or it wasn't a true emergency," Ms. Dubyk said. "Fortunately, that has changed a great deal in the last five years, and more and more people are calling 911 to report suspected impaired drivers."
Across Canada, numerous police services, local, regional and provincial governments, traffic safety organizations and other community partners such as MADD Canada have worked together to implement Call 911 programs. The programs are making a dramatic difference. The first-year increase in 911 calls to report impaired drivers range from 45% to 80%, and the increase in charges and roadside licence suspensions ranges from 30% to 80%.
In cases where police are not able to intercept the vehicles, followup is crucial. Many police services follow up, via personal visits or letters, with the owners of vehicles which were reported in suspected impaired driving incidents.
In the spring, MADD Canada and its new Campaign 911 Title Sponsor, the Automotive Recyclers of Canada (ARC), will host several events to launch and promote the 2012 program. The goal, as always, will be to reach more people with the message to call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers.
"As automobile recyclers, our members see first-hand the wreckage of cars involved in impaired driving crashes," said Wally Dingman, ARC's Board Chair. "Our partnership with MADD Canada is an important way ARC and its members can contribute to the efforts to stop impaired driving, save lives and prevent injuries."
