(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/22/11 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today delivered a keynote address for Mining Day on the Hill. Minister Oliver focused on the importance of the mining industry to the country's economic well-being. This event was co-led by the Economic Club of Canada and the Mining Association of Canada.

"The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of the mining industry and the significant role it plays in providing jobs," said Minister Oliver. "Mining workers and communities across Canada can count on our Government's support of this vital engine of economic growth."

The Minister underlined the fact that the mining industry has been one of the keys to Canada's economic stability for decades. Mining and mineral processing are directly responsible for 308,000 Canadian jobs. Mineral and metal production contributed $35.1 billion to Canada's GDP and 21 percent of the country's total exports in 2010. The Canadian mining sector is set for strong growth with exploration expenditures forecasted to reach over $3.1 billion this year.

"The Canadian mining industry continues to be a major contributor to our national prosperity and quality of life, particularly in the North," added Minister Oliver. "The mining industry contributes billions of dollars in taxes and royalties to government every year, which helps support everything from education, to infrastructure, to health care."

In closing, Minister Oliver emphasized that the Government of Canada will continue to work with the mining industry to make sure Canada continues to be recognized as an innovative and responsible global leader in mining.
