2011 Halifax International Security Forum Successfully Concludes
(firmenpresse) - HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/20/11 -- The third annual Halifax International Security Forum (the Forum) concluded today in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, declared the Forum a resounding success.
"The raison d'etre of the Forum is to bring people together to discuss important and sensitive issues, to learn from each other so that we can do defence and security differently and find ways to be more productive, more agile, and more resilient," said Minister MacKay, "The Forum has definitely stayed true to this intent. Over the last three days, we have had the opportunity to engage in frank and thought-provoking discussions with the world's most respected experts and practitioners on global issues."
The three-day event brought together over 300 prominent defence and security experts and practitioners from around the world to discuss ideas and share insights on important global security challenges. Topics discussed include changes to the security environment since 9/11; the impact of fiscal restraint on security; the future of the transatlantic alliance; as well as emerging issues such as the future of Israel-Palestine relations and the post-revolution environment in Libya.
The Forum also provided an excellent opportunity for the participants to experience the beauty and hospitality of Halifax. At the opening gala dinner at the historic Pier 21, participants recognized Canada's new veterans for their contributions to global security and applauded the Maritime communities for their kindness and assistance during 9/11.
The Forum was supported by the Department of National Defence and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). Since the inaugural conference in 2009, National Defence and ACOA have provided approximately $2.5 million each year to help support the Forum.
