New Federal Funding Means Better Emergency Care for Children
(firmenpresse) - WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/18/11 -- New federal funding will put the latest research findings to work helping and protecting at-risk Canadian youth and children. The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport), on behalf of the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), today announced at the University of Manitoba three new grants issued under the Networks of Centres of Excellence Knowledge Mobilization (NCE-KM) initiative to address mental health problems in children and youth, prevent violence, promote healthy relationships and improve pediatric emergency medicine.
"Our government supports research that brings real benefits to Canadian families and improves their quality of life," said Minister Fletcher. "These networks will promote the health and well-being of children, and help make sure they get the best possible care."
Each of the three networks will receive $1.6 million over four years, representing a total of $4.8 million, and are the first networks to be funded since this initiative was made permanent in 2010. They are:
"This initiative is designed to connect the best research with the people who can put it into practice," said Dr. Suzanne Fortier, Chair of the NCE Steering Committee and President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. "We are confident that these networks will have a positive impact on at-risk children and youth, and on the professionals who work with them."
These new NCE grants fund national, multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral networks that apply and mobilize research findings. Their work must demonstrate social, health or economic benefits for Canadians. The NCE program forges partnerships between universities, industry, government and not-for profit organizations with the goal of turning Canadian research and entrepreneurial talent into economic and social benefits for Canadians.
