Canadian Performers Meet With Prime Minister Harper
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/17/11 -- ACTRA urged Prime Minister Stephen Harper to make Canada's content creation industry a central part of his government's digital strategy in a private meeting this afternoon.
ACTRA President Ferne Downey and National Executive Director Stephen Waddell were joined by Canadian stars Jay Baruchel (Sorcerer's Apprentice, The Trotsky), Peter Keleghan (18 to Life, The Newsroom), Alison Pill (Midnight in Paris, Pillars of the Earth) and Leah Pinsent (ReGenesis, Made in Canada).
"Our message was simple: we need continued, stable government support for our content-creating industry," said Downey. "We want to create jobs, generate investment and sell our Canadian stories to the world."
"For me it was important to let the Prime Minister know how much I love this country. I can work anywhere in the world but I want to live and work here," said Baruchel. "I asked him to keep giving us the tools we need so my generation can make a real contribution to Canada's creative and economic future."
ACTRA thanked the Prime Minister for making the Canada Media Fund permanent and urged him to continue investing in content and create more incentives for private investment. The group also conveyed how critical it is to support creative entrepreneurs through fair copyright laws that allow them to build their businesses by controlling and profiting from their private intellectual property.
Today's meeting follows a two-day lobbying effort on the Hill earlier this month where performers from across the country met with MPs.
ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) is the national organization of professional performers working in the English-language recorded media in Canada. ACTRA represents the interests of 22,000 members across Canada - the foundation of Canada's highly acclaimed professional performing community.
