The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today gave the opening address to 400 delegates at the second annual Canadian Military and Veteran Health Research Forum in Kingston, Ontario.
"The cutting-edge research presented and discussed here at the Forum is invaluable to Veterans Affairs Canada in meeting the needs of our Veterans and their families," said Minister Blaney. "It is an excellent opportunity to bring together national and international experts to talk about research findings and encourage additional research in this area."
Topics to be discussed during Forum 2011 include mental health; operational and environmental health protection; combat casualty care; rehabilitation; transition from military to civilian life; and health care policies and programs.
The forum is organized by the recently created Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research. Founded by Queen's University and the Royal Military College of Canada, the Institute has grown to a consortium of 19 Canadian universities. Established to help address the health research requirements of military, Veterans and their families, the Institute provides a link between universities and government departments such as Veterans Affairs Canada and the Department of National Defence.
"On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I commend the work of the Institute and all its partners. Our Government is proud to support its efforts, including events such as this annual forum," said Minister Blaney. "The discussions over the two days will provide us with invaluable information on how to better meet the needs of our Veterans and their families. The calibre of national and international presenters is outstanding."
In addition to supporting an international speaker, Veterans Affairs Canada has provided a $5,000 contribution toward this year's forum. The Department's researchers will present on a number of topics, including results from its Life After Service Studies program of research; workplace reintegration for those with mental health conditions; and the functional health and well-being of Canadian Forces personnel re-establishing in civilian life.
