8-80 Cities, a non-profit group based in Toronto, is teaming up with world renowned Danish firm Gehl Architects to offer select communities across the province the opportunity to revitalize parks, streets and other public spaces through community participation.
8-80 Cities promotes the idea that public spaces should be welcoming and accessible to people of all ages - from 8 to 80 years old. Gehl Architects is an urban consultancy firm that has contributed to innovative public space projects in New York, Melbourne and Copenhagen.
"Public spaces like parks and streets should be the very best spots in our communities, overflowing with life and vibrancy" says Gil Penalosa, Executive Director of 8-80 Cities and international parks expert. "But many of the public spaces in our cities are poorly designed and under-used. We need to involve the local community in re-creating these spaces. People always have the most fantastic ideas about how a space can be used and improved."
The Make a Place for People project is partly funded by the Ontario government and will take ideas generated directly from local communities to develop plans for the redesign and programming of public spaces. The ultimate goal of the project is to create parks and public spaces that contribute to healthier and more sustainable communities.
8-80 Cities is looking for partners to nominate sites in their community to participate in the project. Eight sites will be selected; Gehl Architects will be working on two of the eight sites. The site application deadline is Dec. 2nd. For more information visit 8-80cities.org or contact Emily Munroe, Director of Programs and Partnerships at .
