Veterans Affairs Minister Steven Blaney Attends Wartime Lunch With Veterans and Students From Across Canada

ID: 1056049

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/10/11 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, joined Veterans and students from across the country today for a modest lunch Canadians would have eaten during the Second World War to ration food supplies and support our troops on the front lines.

About 140 students and staff at the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre sat down to the wartime lunch with local Veterans who had been invited as guests of honour. The meal is held each year as part the 'Canada Remembers' theme week at the Historica-Dominion Institute's Encounters with Canada program. Encounters with Canada allows Canadian teens to meet young people from across the country, spend a week in the nation's capital, explore future career options and learn more about our country.

"By sharing this wartime lunch, we are not just getting a taste of what life was like on Canada's home front, we are remembering our men and women who sacrificed so much to serve so far away from home," said Minister Blaney. "It's remarkable to think that many of those who went to war weren't much older than the students who shared in this lunch today."

Students from across the country arrived in the nation's capital this week for the Encounters with Canada program and to participate in a variety of activities during Veterans' Week. Minister Blaney congratulated the students on their commitment to remembrance.

"Our Government is proud to support programs that engage youth in remembrance and help them learn about the sacrifices and contributions of our Veterans," said Minister Blaney. "I want to thank the students for taking part in such an important program. Through their efforts, they are helping to ensure that future generations of Canadians will always remember the brave men and women who served our country."

Veterans Affairs Canada supports the remembrance component of the Encounters with Canada program with $50,000 in annual funding and contributes an additional $50,000 per year for the program's Peace Module. Both financial contributions are made through the Community Engagement Partnership Fund, which provides financial assistance to non-profit groups and organizations promoting local commemorative activities.
