The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today attended a viewing of the Portraits of Honour mural, created to pay tribute to members of the Canadian Forces who lost their lives while serving in Afghanistan. The National Film Board of Canada also paid tribute by previewing the most recent work of director Claude Guilmain, The Van Doos in Afghanistan, for CF members and their families.

"This unique tribute, which is touring the country, leaves no one unmoved. It is our duty to acknowledge the service and sacrifices of the men and women who choose to wear the uniform of Canada," said Minister Blaney. "This tribute and our presence here today are tangible, positive ways to show our gratitude for what they have done and continue to do for Canada."

Portraits of Honour, created by artist Dave Sopha with the support of Kin Canada and the Kin Canada Foundation, is a hand-painted mural that is travelling the country to display the portaits of all the Canadian Forces members who died in Afghanistan.

The National Film Board of Canada contributed to the rememberance ceremony by previewing the new documentary The Van Doos in Afghanistan. Filmed during the Royal 22e Regiment's last tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2010, the documentary by director Claude Guilmain gives us a glimpse of the everyday life of Canadian troops in a theatre of war through interviews and rare footage of troops from the famous regiment in action.

For Tom Perlmutter, Government Film Commissioner and Chairperson of the NFB, "the Royal 22e Regiment-the Van Doos-stands apart not only as a Francophone regiment, but also because of the crucial role it has played in Canadian missions over the past one hundred or so years of our history. The documentary The Van Doos in Afghanistan gives those women and men a voice, a face and a name, and reflects the NFB's ongoing commitment to tell Canadians the defining stories of our country."
