Parks Canada contributes to infrastructure improvements at site

(firmenpresse) - WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/09/11 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, the Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Regional Minister for Manitoba, today announced an investment in infrastructure improvements at Holy Trinity Anglican Church National Historic Site.

"I am very pleased that the funds provided by Parks Canada for Holy Trinity Anglican Church National Historic Site have helped to make this conservation project a reality," said Minister Toews. "This project is a great example of the investments our Government is making in preserving our historic places in Winnipeg and throughout Manitoba."

Holy Trinity Anglican Church, located in the heart of downtown Winnipeg, was designated a national historic site in 1990 as a fine example of High Victorian Gothic architecture. The picturesque, rough-cut limestone church was constructed in 1883-1884 and has retained an astonishing amount of its original elements. It features a cruciform plan in an irregular outline with dormered clerestory windows along a steeply pitched gable roof and a landscaped courtyard.

Through Parks Canada's National Historic Sites Cost-Sharing Program, the Government of Canada is contributing up to $103,900 to support conservation work on the church's roof.

"One of our Government's major objectives is to inspire Canadians to develop strong and meaningful connections with Canada's national treasures," said Minister Kent. "Our national historic sites are vital to our history, our identity as Canadians, and our tourism industry. By investing in them and by building lasting relationships with the community groups that operate them, we ensure that they will continue to help support local economies and encourage more Canadians to explore and discover our national heritage."

"This project is more than just a repair; without a proper roof, the entire building is exposed to the elements and at risk for damage," said Reverend Merv Lanctot, Rector of Holy Trinity Anglican Church. "The funding received through Parks Canada to help replace the roof is really helping to conserve the church as a whole."

The Cost-Sharing Program reflects Parks Canada's dedication to conserve Canada's heritage through funding towards the conservation of national historic sites. In this centennial year, Parks Canada is pleased to continue its efforts to ensure that Canada's historic and natural heritage is preserved for the enjoyment, education and appreciation of all Canadians, today and in the future.
