Government of Canada Supports the Preservation of Local History and Culture at Sinclair Inn / Farmer's Hotel National Historic Site of Canada
Parks Canada contributes up to $113,700 for infrastructure improvements at site
(firmenpresse) - ANNAPOLIS ROYAL, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/09/11 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Mr. Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova, today announced that the Government of Canada will be investing in improvements at Sinclair Inn / Farmer's Hotel National Historic Site.
"Our Government is proud to support community organizations like the Annapolis Heritage Society in its work to conserve important aspects of Canadian heritage like the Sinclair Inn / Farmer's Hotel National Historic Site," said Mr. Kerr. "We recognize the important role that the Sinclair Inn / Farmer's Hotel plays in preserving and illustrating building techniques and original materials spanning three centuries and the vital part historical sites play in the area's tourism industry."
Sinclair Inn / Farmer's Hotel is one of the earliest buildings in Canada. Once known as the Farmer's Hotel, this two-and-a-half storey wooden structure evolved with the amalgamation of at least two other buildings, including one dating from the Acadian era. Operated as an inn for over 150 years, the business closed in 1950 and was designated a national historic site in 1983. It is now operated as a museum.
Through Parks Canada's National Historic Sites Cost-Sharing Program, the Government of Canada is contributing up to $113,700 to support conservation work on the Inn's roof, exterior walls, windows and support structure. It will also support the preparation of a maintenance plan and presentation materials on the story of the building.
"One of our Government's major objectives is to inspire Canadians to develop strong and meaningful connections with Canada's national treasures," said Minister Kent. "Our national historic sites are vital to our history, our identity as Canadians, and our tourism industry. By investing in them and by building lasting relationships with the community groups that operate them, we ensure that they will continue to help support local economies and encourage more Canadians to explore and discover our national heritage."
"We are very happy that this funding has allowed us to provide the Sinclair Inn Museum with some important conservation work," said Ryan Scranton, Executive Director of the Annapolis Heritage Society. "This 300 year old structure is a testament to the varied building techniques and materials used by early European settlers of Nova Scotia. New interpretive installations will allow visitors to gain a greater appreciation for the complex history of this important building. We are excited to have the opportunity to share more of our story with Canadians."
Parks Canada's Cost-Sharing Program reflects the Government of Canada's dedication to protect Canada's heritage through funding towards the conservation of our national historic sites. In this centennial year, Parks Canada is pleased to continue its efforts to ensure that Canada's historic and natural heritage is protected for the enjoyment, education and appreciation of all Canadians, today and in the future.
