Public Service Professionals Rally in Montreal in Support of a Fair Contract
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/08/11 -- Public service professionals represented by the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) took to the streets of downtown Montreal today to remind the federal government that they expect it to conduct fair and equitable contract negotiations in the months ahead.
"Our members refuse to be the government's designated scapegoat for the poor state of Canada's finances", said PIPSC President Gary Corbett. "They've had enough of the unending rounds of staff and budget cuts that have left the public service struggling to meet its obligations to Canadians. It's time for the government to get serious about bargaining in good faith with its employees and to stop trying to nickel ad dime its way to a balanced budget", he added.
The employees who demonstrated today include computer specialists, auditors, commerce officers and purchasing and supply specialists. They are very representative of the real value that the public service delivers to fellow citizens. Their duties encompass financial management and internal audit, income tax audits, and ensuring the confidentiality of Canadians' personal information. "These, and the many other important services that Canadians obtain from their public service, can't be thrown to the wind with no regard for the consequences on the economy and on the social fabric of communities across the country. The government has to set aside its ideological bias, recognize the value of public servants, and give them the tools and resources they need to get the job done", he concluded.
The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents some 60,000 professionals and scientists across Canada's public sector.
