Parks Canada grants up to $425,000 for infrastructure improvements at site
(firmenpresse) - FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK -- (Marketwire) -- 11/08/11 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Minister for the Atlantic Gateway and Member of Parliament for Fredericton, today announced that the Government of Canada will be investing in infrastructure improvements at Fredericton City Hall National Historic Site of Canada.
"Our Government is proud to play a leadership role in the protection of Canada's heritage buildings such as Fredericton City Hall," said Minister Ashfield. "We recognize just how important history, heritage and tourism are, and the valuable role that our Cost-Sharing Program plays in enhancing economic and cultural benefits for the Atlantic Region."
Fredericton City Hall, built in 1875-1876, is prominently located in downtown Fredericton, New Brunswick. Designated a national historic site in 1984, it is the oldest municipal hall in Atlantic Canada still used for civic administration and a grand example of the Second Empire style, frequently used for public buildings in the 19th century. The building continues to be used as municipal offices and council chambers, although it once also contained an upper-storey 810-seat auditorium known as the Opera House, a police station and jail, and a market in its basement.
Through Parks Canada's National Historic Sites Cost-Sharing Program, the Government of Canada will be contributing up to $425,000 to support conservation work on the building's masonry and windows, and the preparation of a conservation plan.
