Canada Pays Tribute to All Who Served at Remembrance Ceremony at the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland
(firmenpresse) - BEAUMONT-HAMEL, FRANCE -- (Marketwire) -- 11/05/11 -- Many Canadian and French citizens gathered today at the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial in France, to pay tribute to the men and women who served their countries from the First World War to current missions.
Representing the Government of Canada, Mrs. Flavie Major, Counsellor, Political Affairs, Canadian Embassy in Paris, addressed the gathering on behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs. She was joined by Mr. Jean-Marc Bassaget, Sous-Prefet of Peronne, representing the French Republic.
"The men and women who have served our country gave selflessly for our freedom; some paid with their lives, and we are enormously grateful and must always remember their sacrifices," said Minister Blaney. "During Veterans' Week, we pause to remember and pay tribute to all Canadian Veterans and continue to honour those who serve our country in areas of conflict today. They serve with conviction, with pride, and with compassion. These remarkable heroes are the reason we remember."
"In this year that marks the 95th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, the Government of Canada remains committed to honouring the valour of the men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment who paid so dear a price for freedom," said Mrs. Major. "Today, 93 years after the Armistice that ended the First World War, we remember how important it is to keep the memory of that generation of extraordinary citizens alive, a generation that left its mark at Passchendaele, Vimy and Beaumont-Hamel, to name only a few of the historic sites where they demonstrated such tremendous courage and resolve."
This year, during Veterans' Week from November 5 to 11, make remembrance more than something you feel, make it something you do. Show how you remember by attending a Remembrance Day ceremony, visiting the local cenotaph or monument, sharing your thoughts of remembrance online, or wearing a poppy with pride. This Veterans' Week, how will you remember?
