The University of Calgary will confer honorary degrees upon three accomplished individuals this month

(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/04/11 -- More than 1,300 students will graduate from the University of Calgary during the fall convocation ceremonies next Thursday. The university will also present honorary degrees to three accomplished individuals who have achieved an extraordinary standard of excellence in their chosen fields during two convocation ceremonies on November 10, and at a special ceremony on November 17.

The recipients of the university's highest honour include The Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, 27(th) Governor General and Commander in Chief of Canada from 2005 to 2010; Chancellor Emeritus John R. (Jack) Perraton, C.M., Q.C.; and Calgary philanthropist Joan Snyder.

"These individuals have had a measurable impact both locally and internationally. They're such positive role models for our students, faculty and staff at the university," said Chancellor Jim Dinning. "We are honoured to count them among the cohort of remarkable individuals who have received honorary degrees from the University of Calgary."

The Right Honourable Michaelle Jean served generously as the Governor General and Commander in Chief of Canada from 2005 to 2010, and is currently the UNESCO Special Envoy for Haiti and Co-President of the Michaelle Jean Foundation. She receives the Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of her distinguished career as Governor General and for her ongoing humanitarian efforts. Her honorary degree will be conferred at a special convocation ceremony on Nov. 17.

Jack Perraton has been one of the University of Calgary's longest-serving and most dedicated supporters through 12 years of involvement on the Board of Governors, and was the first person at the University of Calgary to hold both the position of chancellor from 1998 to 2002 and chair from 2007 to 2010. Throughout his tenure, his priority was always students; he wanted each one to have an excellent education and quality of life experience while attending the university. His focus on students during his time as chancellor resulted in two Presidential Citations by the Students' Union in 1999 and 2001. His honorary degree will be conferred on Nov. 10 at the morning convocation.

Joan Snyder is a Calgary philanthropist who is noted for her inspiration to women in sport and excellence in medical research. Her community spirit and generosity have benefitted many, particularly in the areas of medical research, women's athletics, animal welfare and community culture. Her honorary degree will be conferred on Nov. 10 at the afternoon convocation.

The fall convocation ceremonies will see more than 1,300 students graduate-joining the University of Calgary's alumni family of more than 145,000 people in 147 countries around the world.
