The Fraser Institute: Awards for Excellence in Education Honour Alberta Schools for Academic Achievement
(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/03/11 -- Educators from outstanding Alberta elementary schools will be recognized at the annual on Tuesday, November 8 at the Westin Calgary. More than 260 educators representing 37 schools across the province will attend the reception and awards dinner.
The annual awards honour teachers, principals, support staff, and volunteers in three categories of academic achievement. The Garfield Weston Award for Improvement in Academics recognizes elementary schools that have experienced the fastest, most consistent improvement in their academic performance over the past five years. The Garfield Weston Award for Excellence in Language Arts recognizes elementary schools where, in each of the past five years, students have scored above average on Grade 3 and Grade 6 provincial achievement tests in language arts. The Imperial Oil Foundation Award for Excellence in Science honours elementary schools where students have performed above average on Grade 6 provincial achievement tests in science for the past two years.
The Awards for Excellence are based on an analysis of Alberta Education's student results data for each school included in the Fraser Institute's annual Report Card on Alberta's Elementary Schools. Out of 654 elementary schools included in the report card, only the top 30 performers in each category were invited to participate in the awards.
Winning schools in each category will be presented with a $3,000 award. The two runners-up in each category will receive a $1,000 award. The remaining school teams receive School of Distinction recognition.
A complete list of participating schools appears on the next page.
Interested media are invited to the awards presentation and are asked to confirm attendance with Kendal Egli, Fraser Institute communications coordinator, at (604) 688-0221 ext. 517 or . School principals in attendance will be available for interviews and photographs.
