Sit-In at City Hall in Protest of Untested Rape Kits - TODAY AT NOON
Victims, Community Leaders and Concerned Citizens Gather Today, November 3, at City Hall - Urge Mayor to Have Thousands of Untested Rape Kits Processed
(firmenpresse) - HOUSTON, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 11/03/11 -- A large group of victims, community leaders and concerned citizens will gather today in a Sit-In at City Hall to urge Mayor Anise Parker to have the thousands of untested rape kits at the Houston Police Department processed.
The event is scheduled for today, November 3, at 12:00 p.m. at City Hall (Bagby side of the building located at 901 Bagby). Participants are asked to wear red, white or pink and to bring a rose or carnation in one of these colors to leave on the steps of City Hall.
According to Elizabeth Perez, one of the event organizers working in collaboration with the Houston Area Pastor Council, everyone is encouraged to join this peaceful rally, in order to underscore the growing concern.
"We're asking the Mayor to process the thousands of untested rape kits," said Perez.
"I was asked to help organize this event in light of my recent public testimony as a two-time victim. I ask for your support on behalf of ALL victims who have waited in the dark -- and on the sidelines waiting for justice to be served," added Perez.
Perez explained that the colors for the Sit-In were selected for what they symbolized; red for a victim's courage, white for peace and justice and pink for the women and young girls who have been victimized.
There are an estimated 15,000 untested rape kits currently at the Houston Police Department, which has become the center of debate among local political leaders and a growing concern for citizens and advocates of public safety.
