(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/03/11 -- Canada's leading national conference on alcohol, drugs and other substances will be held in Vancouver next week, November 6-9, 2011. More than 400 experts will gather at to discuss latest research and best practices in the field of substance abuse and addictions.

IOS 2011 offers a comprehensive of presentations, workshops and discussions for researchers, policy-makers and experts in the service delivery and enforcement communities.

Sessions of note include:

Sunday November 6, 1:30: This session will provide an overview of the drugs-and-driving problem in Canada through the eyes of a Victoria police officer, an emergency room physician and a substance abuse expert.

Monday November 7, 11:00: LGBT2SQ Access in Mental Health and Addictions. Research shows that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Two Spirit and Queer people are at higher risk for mental, physical, and substance abuse problems, are underserved, and face more barriers to accessing services. This session explores core competency issues for professionals and agencies working with queer and trans populations.

Monday November 7, 1:30: Contaminated Spaces: The Construction of Stigma and Drug Use in the Media. A review and analysis of over 350 media articles related to drug use shows that responses to injection drug use is affected not only by policies and legal frameworks, but also by how drug use is portrayed in the media.

Tuesday Nov 8, 11:00, Seeing Around the Corner: Monitoring Trends. Two sessions in the same workshop provide research on (1) recent drugs trends British Columbia with an assessment of their impact while helping to dispel some urban myths, and (2) how personality is a strong determinant of substance misuse in youth. Features research from keynote speaker and University of Montreal professor Patricia Conrod, developer of the most successful drug and alcohol prevention program for young people in the UK.





Tuesday Nov 8, 1:30, Use of multiple drugs at a large, multi-day music festival in Western Canada. Research on the concurrent and simultaneous use of two or more psychoactive substances is common among young adult drug users at raves and music festivals. This research examines the phenomenon at a large, multi-day, music festival in western Canada attended by over 12,000 people.
