Canadian Digestive Health Analysis Identifies Toronto and McMaster as Dominant Research Centres

ID: 1052987

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/03/11 -- A comprehensive analysis of over 100 digestive health researchers in Canada demonstrates that the University of Toronto and McMaster University are the most dominant in terms of the impact and influence of published research. A summary of the study was published today in the Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology. The University of Calgary, University of Manitoba and University of Western Ontario also had above-average rankings for impact and influence. The study focused on the number of times a researcher's medical research articles are cited by other researchers around the world. An earlier analysis had ranked Canada's digestive health researchers among the best in the world.

"Metrics on publication impact and influence are increasingly being employed to evaluate medical researchers" remarked Dr. Philip Sherman of the Hospital for Sick Children. "This analysis provides an intriguing and very informative overview of the digestive health research community in Canada"

The study also examined whether research success was influenced by gender. No such relationship was detected, but the authors did report that the University of Toronto was particularly strong in terms of female researchers. Of the top 10 female digestive health researchers in Canada, 9 are based at the University of Toronto.

The study's lead author, Desiree Tuitt, suggested that the data can be useful in optimizing investments in research. "There is tremendous competition for medical research funding in Canada. Our analysis has identified the researchers who are having the greatest impact in this field - in other words, those who are achieving the greatest bang for each research buck".
