(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 11/02/11 -- When the temperature drops it can be difficult to find the motivation to tackle those niggling DIY jobs. Here are some tips on how to deal with the most important household problems, helping to keep your home in top condition during the winter freeze.

Garden

Make sure you pack away your gardening equipment somewhere dry and safe, keeping it well oiled to prevent any rust. Use a rake to turn the soil on your lawn to help slow the growth of moss. If you have a garden pond, clear out any debris and grime before freezing temperatures hit, then regularly break the ice to keep the water oxygenated. Winter is also a good time to repair any fences, as climbing plants are less aggressive.

Wrap your pipes to help prevent any bursts or damage in extreme weather; moulded pipe sleeves are a good way to keep the frost out. It's a good idea to have a contact for an to hand to quickly and safely fix any problems that do occur.

Heating System

Our central heating becomes our lifeblood during the colder months. But if you're running a poorly maintained system you could be spending more money than you need to heat your home. Bleed all your radiators and clean any dust and debris from your pipes and boiler. Consider investing in heavy drapes to prevent heat from leaking out of the windows, sealing any cracks. Check that your thermostat is running between 18 degrees C and 21 degrees C for the highest energy efficiency and programme the hot water and heating to only come on when needed.

You should service your boiler and gas appliances at least once a year to ensure they're working correctly and not leaking any poisonous carbon monoxide into your home. If you have boiler cover, this should include an annual service by an accredited engineer.

Clean the Gutters and Roof

Gutters can quickly become clogged with leaves and other debris during the summer, which prevents water properly. During the colder months this water can freeze and expand, causing damage to your home. Take the time to check your gutters and downspouts for blockages, clearing out any debris. Placing plastic or wire mesh over your gutters is a good way to stop clogs from happening again. Loose tiles can also become a problem during the winter, so check your roof and replace any damaged tiles or shingles.

Prepare for Emergencies

Extreme winter weather can often lead to blackouts or flooding, so it pays to be prepared ahead of time. Stock up on candles, flashlights and batteries, and store them somewhere easily accessible if an emergency does happen. Make sure everyone in the house knows where to find them and consider preparing a simple plan of action, such as where to meet in the house. If you live in an area where you can easily become snowed in, make sure you always have enough food and water to last you a few days.
